Rick, I got this completely wrong. Sorry about that. I see I even mislead another PDMLer.

I have spent a lot of time searching on the web. There are so many festivals/processions/expos both religious & secular during the year it becomes a veritable minefield. The Toledo Diocesan site has nothing on the 19th May.

I see there is a banner under the canopy with the words "TOLEDO 1955 (or 1956 or 1985 or 1986)" on it. This may be the key. Perhaps you have some other images? Toledo was declared a National Heritage Site in 1985, so that may be it?

Keep well

That's the wrong link but processions celebrating Mary are held in May being the month of Our Lady.

John,

That is a very clever thought.

Alas, it is the Church de Santo Tomas, and there are about 15 Saint Thomases listed in Wikipedia. I looked at several articles about the church, and none say which St. Thomas it was. “Santo Tomas” and “Saint Thomas” score no Google hits with “May 19”.

Sigh.

As we were returning to our hotel in Toledo, we found our way blocked by a fairly long procession. I suspect that it started at a large church at the
top of the hill.
The desk staff at the hotel (very nearby) didn’t know what the occasion was, and I was able to learn nothing from Señor Google. Professor Wikipedia says that rosemary (fastened to sticks in the last couple of images) can be a symbol of remembrance in European funerals, but the atmosphere of this crowd
was festive rather than funereal.
Comments and enlightenment welcome!

I can't actually see the photos because the internet is being an asshole this afternoon, but a few thoughts occur ...

Who is the patron saint of the large church on the hill? When is that saint's day?
