For many years I swore by my Lowepro Fastpak 350, it’s one major shortcoming
was the lack of an easy way to cary a tripod.
It having a large open “top pocket” that acted more like a regular small
backpack was great for a multiuse bag, but took away space for lenses etc.
One feature I find very important on backpacks is a convenient outside pocket
for things like keys and wallet.
I also find a laptop pocket handy, even when I’m not carrying a laptop, it’s
handy for large flat things like flash diffusers, or my 5 section monopod.

One feature on some backpacks, which is nice, is the ability to access the
camera from the side, without opening the whole thing, so you can slip out of
one shoulder strap, swing it around and grab your camera.

When for various reasons, my Fastpak 350 wasn’t working as well for me anymore,
I started looking for something new and found a Tenba which is a little bigger
than the 350, uses the whole body for lens pockets, and pretty much meets all
of Scott’s requirement, including the mount for carrying a tripod

The first time that I was into photography, I would attach film cans to my
camera straps, to carry a couple extra rolls of film. When I got my K100D, I
was about to make something similar, but first did some research and Tamrac
already made camera straps with SD card pockets. These work great, I keep
“empty” cards in the left pocket and “full” ones in the right. The straps also
have quick releases so they could be shared between multiple cameras, or
removed when you don’t actually want a strap dangling.
