Thank you for your comments, John and Henk!

John:
Every so often I re-evaluate the grip option, and so far I was not compelled to use one: I have had Zx-5n, *ist DS, K-5, K-7, and with all of them, I've valued the compact size of the body. Following your thought about the extra battery, I've looked again, - but decided to hold off. After all a spare battery takes much less space in the bag.

That relates to Henk's suggestion about the bag size.
I have a few bags: a huge one, a messenger bag, and a back-pack that has not been used much recently. The huge one (Tamrac Pro 12) is for when I am going for a photo-shooting session or event, and need the convenience of quickly reaching for the 2nd body, or whatever... I also use it as the 2nd bag with all the spares when I am on a car trip, like the recent one to Yellowstone, etc. That one couldn't be any bigger, or I'd need a pony to carry it, as my wife has been suggesting for years.

For the past 7+ years, my "main" bag has been Vanguard Up-Rise II 33 Messenger Bag. (It's traveled to 4 continents.) The very important feature of it is that it [almost] fits the size limit for the "personal item" for air travel. So, I can not go larger.

Cheers,

Igor

Igor, I think you need a larger camera bag for the K-1.

The position of the live-view button on the right is a more logical place, where your thumb is anyway. I'm now searching for this button every time I hold my K-5 instead of the K-1.

I like the battery grip for all my Pentax DSLRs. On the K-1 it comes with an auxiliary tray that allows you to use AA batteries in a pinch, although I don't think I've ever needed to use them more than a couple of times.

Eventually you get used to the different control layout.

Hi All!

I just had a big "field" test for the K-1, - on a trip to national parks.
I have been using it for a bit here and there, but this was the first one with many photos taken. Most K-1 owners have had it for a while, - so it is not new to them, so, my apology for boring you with my rambling. :-)

The first, and the biggest impression (which I already had before), - K-1 eats battery much faster than K-5 and K-7.
After some 430 photos in one day, the battery was almost empty.
Unless I am mixing it up, I seem to remember shooting some 600-800 shots on one battery with either K-7 or K-5.

The second impression is that after a few months of using this camera, I still keep pushing by mistake the live-view button on the left side when I need the "view photos" button on the left side that used to be there on
the previous models.

One more observation: While putting the camera into my photo bag and taking it out, I keep accidentally rotating the little diopter adjustment knob. In K-5 and K-7, it was a linear slider, and it was hidden behind the rubber shade.

Less often, I also accidentally rotate the "2nd" big knob on top - at the most right position. Occasionally, I also rotate (accidentally) the "1st" big knob on the right - the one that chooses the parameter being varied by the 2nd knob. I don't remember ever having any knobs accidentally rotated on any of my previous cameras (7, of which 4 were Pentax).

Otherwise, I greatly enjoy the camera.

I haven't done much of "shooting from the hip" with it yet, - but it seems to be aiming right. (I had problems with that with one of the earlier Pentax DSLRs.)

Thanks for reading!

Igor
