LOL! 

Okay, I've spent an hour or so studying up on botanical terms.
I believe it is best called a "spike" … the little tendrils are the residual 
bits from where the flowers, seeds, or fruit grow. 
I could not for the life of me think of what it might be called earlier today … 
I'll change the name now.
