I looked at off the shelf storage solutions and didn't find one I could afford.

I built this one out of pieces-parts for ~ $1500 and 2/3 of that is the 10 drives I have in it.

Plus I learned how to do some stuff I hadn't known how to do before.

Still got to figure out a backup solution. I don't want "cloud".

I bought a Drobo in around 2006. It worked flawlessly, but as a USB1
device, it got really slow as file sizes increased.
I upgraded a few years ago to a newer version that is USB3/Firewire.
This one has room for 5 spinny discs plus an SSD that it uses as a buffer.
IIRC, I have 3tb drives in it, and with dual disc redundancy it is giving
me somewhere around 5tb of storage space.

I did have a bit of a disaster with it a whole back, pretty sure my fault,
but I managed to erase my entire image bank from it.
I was able to restore almost everything from other drives and my old Drobo.

Anyway, it's a really easy to get along with solution, and with being able
to lose 2 out of five drives without losing data, I'm confident that I am
the weak point in my data storage solution.
