I looked at off the shelf storage solutions and didn't find one I could afford.

I certainly understand that game.

I built this one out of pieces-parts for ~ $1500 and 2/3 of that is the 10
drives I have in it.

10 drives? That must be one large case.

I’m very interested in learning what you did. My synology is going to fill up
pretty soon and it’s close to maxed out.

It has issues with limits on the partition size, and it seems really quite slow.

Case is a Sharktoon T9. I have two Icy-Dock FatCage MB155SP-B 5-in-3 SATA backplanes; two RiiTOP PCIe 6-port SATA III Adapter Cards with 5-2TB Seagate NAS drives in one cage & 5-4TB Seagate NAS drives in the other.

The 2TB drives were the drives at the $100 sweet spot when I bought them. By the time I was ready to buy the second set, the 4TB drives were at $100.

Plus I learned how to do some stuff I hadn't known how to do before.

As long as that didn’t include new reasons to swear at electronics ..

No, but I was reminded of some of the OLD reasons to swear at them.

When was the last time you had a computer that wouldn't boot because of a faulty power switch?
