I'll vote for the tihin crust, too, but if it's deep dish you want, Maggiano's is pretty decent.

Unos and Duos ain’t what they used to be. They were sold, franchised and pretty much destroyed. Last time I was at Unos it was very ordinary. In any case derp dish pizza was pretty much a Johnny come lately in
Chicago. The real pizza of Chicago’s Italian immigrants is thin crust, decadent and cut into small squares. Italian bar owners started serving it more than a century ago. It’s sometimes called tavern style. The crust is thin and rich but not cracker-like. A bit of corn flour on the bottom adds texture. Sauce goes generously atop the crust followed by hearty hunks of loose sausage and topped fully with premium mozzarella. The cheese floats on the sauce and sausage grease. Done right, as it is in many places particularly on the south side, It’s to die for. There’s probably at least one good pie joint in Waukegan but it won’t bear any of the names popularized by the tourist crowd. It’ll be small, probably next door to a bar, and it will have a name like Vito and Frankie’s.

You won't be passing through Chicago to and from the airport
.. . Wauegan is one of our burbs.. and 2 miles north is the town of Zion where
I was staying
when the 2010 PDML exhibit was on... at my oldest friend's daughter's home
was and where friend spent her last years of life.. the banner on my web page
was taken in the Illinois Beach Nature Preserve - essentially in Waukegan.
There is a woodland trail there along the lake. O'Hare airport is south west
from Waukegan and North west of Chicago proper..

Sorry you aren't really staying in the city... but you can get stroll along the
shore of Lake Mich in that state park on along the woodland trail.. such
a different look than what you are used to.

Ann,

I've only been in Chicago a couple of times and very briefly at that … Never
had any time to learn the city.

I'm not actually going to be in Chicago much on this trip either: I'll spend
most of my time a bit up-state in Waukegan. It's mostly a pass-through Chicago
on the way from and to the airport.

Yeah, the pizzerias may all be takeout only. Sigh.

Yes! .. but don't call it's location "downtown" there is no"downtown" in Chicago in the
sense you mean .. in Chi town it is "the Loop" so called because part of the elevated section of
the subway system makes that shape ..

Uno's has a sister location nearby which is a bit larger and absolutely the
same pie - and my fave of the two locations.. BUT
looks like they are just doing take out due to THE virus.. it is at the corner
of Wabash and Ontario. .. Possibly Uno is only takeout/delivery.

What hotel are you staying in? We should talk when you are on your way or
there..

Is it possible you have NEVER been to Chicago?

Thank you, Ann!

Is that the Pizzeria Uno on E Ohio Street in downtown Chicago? There might be
time to make a stop there… :D

I don't know exactly how much of my time there will be taken up by business,
most of the time I'll be up in Waukegan area. But if there's time, and dinner
calls, a bit of the original Chicago deep dish pizza sounds real good! I might
have a full day to spare on my hands..

Yes: I posted that set of photos some time around November 2019.

Sooner or later "different" scares people.
