Mostly Jazz, Pop & Rock from the 40s through the "naughties" and about half
of it reflects of how American music filtered through Europe (particularly
France) to their former colonies and came back to us as World Music.

That's an interesting perspective. My understanding of world music is that
it's attractive precisely because it is not derived from types popular in the
nothern/western quadrant of the planet.

I don't think it's the sum total of "world music", but the parts I enjoy listening to mostly have some relationship to "American" music (40s, 50s, 60s ...), if nothing more than being inspired by it or inspired by its derivatives.

When I was in Iraq, there was satellite TV in our day-room/office and the channels we could get were CNN, Fox News, BBC World News, MCM (a French music channel a la MTV) and a Turkish "fashion" channel (???).

During the duty-day the TV would be tuned to CNN, Fox or BBC, but after hours we could switch to the other two channels - MCM or the Turkish fashion channel. I always opted for music when it was my turn to choose.

MCM had some American rock 'n roll, a LOT of French rock 'n roll (and French hip-hop & French rap music) and "French" rock 'n roll from Africa and Asia.
