The famous, largely unschooled, English Canal Engineer, James Brindley, designed his canal systems mentally while sitting in a darkened room. His famous Bridgewater Canal featured aqueducts over rivers which ultimately ended the monopoly of the river boat transporters in the Birmingham area. Then came the railways which put paid to the narrowboat traders but the canals live on for recreational purposes!
