Thanks for replying!
Problem solved in a long call with Apple support. It seems something
mutated in the OS, so we re-installed it.
It’s an M1 Mac mini, running Ventura. The old Mac mini turned belly-up a
couple of months ago.

Have you powered it off and then back on again? (To force any Mac to
power off if the menu isn't working, just hold down the power button for
