I know nothing about the BG10... but I do know the answer to your second
question. It's about the battery... you can choose to use the AA batteries
of the BG10 (LR6), or the lithium(Li) battery, which probably is the intern
battery of the camera (CR123?).
If you put it on LR6, the camera will drain the penlites and with Li, the
penlites remain untouched, whether they're in the grip or not :)
