It used, IIRC, same process as first used on Praktica L cameras top/bottom plates and also some FD Canons - a molded plastic top and bottom, which is plated with a thin layer of metal, probably chromeplating (it needs a special layer to be made on the plastic first so it can be electroplated with chromium). It makes it look like metal, but keeps weight down significantly. But it can also crack if it falls. That's exactly what happened to two K1000 I saw back then, both had cracks in the bottom plate from impact (one was mine).
