Tom, I'm doing it with AF360FGZ's, but I suspect that it is the same for the 500FTZ. Basically, have one light attached to the camera via 5p cord and the others on optical slaves or use the internal slave of the flash. To fire each unit individually, turn the other slave flashes off and use the test button. To test all of them, just use the test button on the one hooked up to the 5p cord. Based on my flash meter, they fire according to the settings you have made.
