We've debated this here on the PDML before, but without reaching a
consensus.  However, my way of thinking does agree with yours,
Brendan.  That is, vignetting is the term properly used to describe
the result of some mechanical structure (e.g., a hood, a filter
ring, or the lens barrel itself) cutting off light on its way to the
film.  On the other hand, fall-off is the term that refers to uneven
illumination at the film due to optical ("glass") reasons, more
common in wider FL lenses.  But, only some of us will agree...
