Their latest plusses were due to financial reasons. Now if the likes of the F5 and EOS-1v are money makers, the Rebels and the like certainly are. Not to mention the P&S cameras. Where exactly are these companies loosing money? If there were lot of profit in pro gear don't you think other manufacturers would have been more interested?
