Well, just because you're not willing to pay more than 500 for doesn't mean it's 
overpriced. I don't want to spend the money for an Mercedes S-class but that doesn't 
mean it's overpriced.

I think it's mostly due to Pentax lack of image and thereby credibility. I'm certain 
that the Z-1p would have been a successful Nikon. However, due to Pentax low brand 
value (they wasted it), a Pentax need to be special indeed for users of other brands 
to notice. The Z-1p was simply too similar to other cameras of the same vintage and 
stand a chance against the Nikon F90 although the Z-1p is better camera.

The MZ-S isn't designed to sell as much as originally intended for the Z-1p. It 
doesn't need to sell as much to be regarded successful.
