Hi Keith,
I referred to my original Spotmatic as a "Funtax" and used it
semi-professionally in the early 60s. I did buy a Spotmatic II when they
arrived on the scene. The type of photography I did was action sports
(basket ball and the Utah Stars of the old ABA). The thing I did not like
about the II was the hot shoe. It left impressions on my forehead due to my
shooting style.
The metering of the day was full screen averaging. Prior to the "F",
metering was a the shooting aperture rather than wide open in the case of
the "F". Metering IMHO is better with stop down metering. Stopping down and
setting the aperture and speed allowed extra time for composure and check of
depth of field.
I have all three Spotmatics and I still prefer the original SP. Perhaps
it is because someone once said that the Spotmatic was what Leica should
have built instead of their original SL. A stylish and mechanically perfect
camera.
