They didn't expect the full-time students to buy cameras at all, they expected them to use the very beaten-up K1000s that were sitting on rows of shelves. When they needed them they signed them out. Presumably the college had, back in the mists of time, got some sort of bulk discount. What this means is that if the course didn't put the students off for life then they had to buy their own cameras when they'd graduated, and so weren't obliged to get a K1000. I've always assumed that this was common practice, at least in the UK. However, one of my local photo dealers told me a year or 2 ago that the colleges here tell students to buy a K1000, and only a K1000. This leads to high prices for them in August and September, and a glut on the market in December when they sell them to buy non-photographic chemicals, food, and the bus fare home for Christmas.
