   People tend to forget that a vast part of a digital SLR
   development effort is the software. I doubt that Pentax wrote for
   the initial MR-52 something like a true OS with a hardware
   abstraction layer (HAL) that will allow them to switch to whatever
   underlying CCD/CMOS sensor. I suspect that even now the processors
   are not fast enough to allow this kind of approach. A DSL software
   must still be highly dependant on the light sensor, and any change
   in the sensor interface must be a nightmare for the software
   developers. Even modules like power management need to be
   constantly updated to cope with the changing demands, now that here
   is a fierce competition too. Add to this provisions or even
   implementation of new lens technologies (where Pentax grossly lacks
   too) and we can see why a DSLR is a completely new project, for
   Pentax at least.
   
   In this light, things like chassis design look rather like a
   cosmetic decision.
