Your right, $500 for an A 400/5.6 is a good price.
I'd buy it, but I already have one. <g>
Still, for anyone looking to 'reach out and touch someone'...
this is a great lens.

I bought mine locally about 2 hours before the opening game of Football 
(American Football) about 7 years ago.  KEH had one in their catalogue and 
the local shop wanted more for theirs.  I offered them the KEH price and they 
took it.  As the local guy backed out the taxes from the total price and 
wrote the deal up.  I hurried off to the game.  

I've never regretted picking up the lens.  Much longer lenses get heavy and 
expensive.  The faster A 400/2.8 is outrageously expensive, too expensive for 
me to take anywhere and use.  And the results from putting a 2X-SA or 1.4X-SA 
teleconverter on an A*300/4 just aren't as satisfying.
