Beware Brad! The gift is valued at a maximum of 40$ I think. So 600$ minus 40$...

If you get hit, it will cost you quite a bit. Packs under 100$ get hit about once every four packets around here. I don't know about more expensive ones. It is more lucrative for them. But I've paid duties on packets worth 13 US $ and nothing on a few over 100$. It is only a question of luck I think. Custom agents have tons of packets moving in front of them and take one, do the paperwork, take another one, etc...

But you could also do like Frank and be happy to pay because the government needs this money soooo bad. Especially if you have not been able to get unemployment because you've not reached 900 work-hours last year...

Andre

Mine is being sent marked as 'gift'. I've done this with computer parts
before across the border, and don't pay for anything but the price to the
seller.

Brad.

(Talking about a 600$ US item)

No custom fees if it is written that it's a used item, but, as
always, you'll have to pay GST and provincial tax (if applicable), so
7% GST plus 7-8% depending on the province (if applicable), plus 5$
brokerage fee. This is the cost if sent BY MAIL. UPS and FedEx
charge a lot more for brokerage fees. On a 600$ item, I guess it
would be easily over 100$ can, only for brokerage.

You can also ask the seller to insure it for only part of the value
and you'll pay less on taxes. The way I see it, the cost of
insurance is not really the few dollars you pay to the seller but the
taxes you pay to canadian government. Understand what I mean?
