Brad, if you were to ask me, I wouldn't get tied up in it right now. Use the 
400mm. Get used to it. You will likely find that you will not want to add a 
2X to it or even a 1.4 convertor. i would invest in other things before these 
two. In saying that, I have both the 2XS and 1.4XS convertors (just got them 
from a friend when I bought out all his equipment). I also have  a vivitar 
2Xmacro. If I were you, and really wanted to spend some money on a 2X 
convertor, I would look for a Vivtar 2X macro and go with that for now. They 
are excellent convertors and give you the benefit of very good macro 
capabilites with all your lenses (they are a combination of a 7-element 
convertor and extension tube for about $100 Cdn..... 
Unless you have a very good reason to go to 800mm I would not go there yet. 
Be happy with 400mm for now...
