Brad, if you were to ask me, I wouldn't get tied up in it right now. Use the 400mm. Get used to it. You will likely find that you will not want to add a 2X to it or even a 1.4 convertor. i would invest in other things before these two. In saying that, I have both the 2XS and 1.4XS convertors (just got them from a friend when I bought out all his equipment). I also have a vivitar 2Xmacro. If I were you, and really wanted to spend some money on a 2X convertor, I would look for a Vivtar 2X macro and go with that for now. They are excellent convertors and give you the benefit of very good macro capabilites with all your lenses (they are a combination of a 7-element convertor and extension tube for about $100 Cdn..... Unless you have a very good reason to go to 800mm I would not go there yet. Be happy with 400mm for now... Vic

I know from you that the 1.4x L fits my lens, but not sure on the 2x L, of course, gonna be tough finding a place that has one to try out. So the quality is worse at 2x then..hmmm.....and 800mm was so tempting. ~600mm isn't bad I suppose :) May stick with the better and compatible 1.4x L. Thanks for the info Bruce. Brad >>
