I'm a total n00b here, but I got wifi working with Ubuntu using 
ndiswrapper. Took me two days of screwing around. Would have 
taken an hour or two if I'd had half a clue what I was doing.

My internal wifi is a Broadcom chip, which is one of the more 
problematic ones. Look for info on ndiswrapper and it should give 
you some sense of direction. There's a ton of documentation about 
it on the net. None was comprehensible to me, but you seem to 
know your way around Linux, so hopefully the instructions will 
make sense to you.
