Did he power down the modem with the power switch on the front, or did he 
physically disconnect the power plug from the unit? On my cable modem from 
Comcast (RCA), the power button is more of a standby button. I was instructed 
some years ago that when I need to reset the modem, I have to remove power 
from it for 30 seconds. Over the years, this has worked every time I've done 
it.
