The images in trunk/doc/design_images/ are the results of the first
brainstorming and design meeting that John, Jason, and I had. They're
pretty much the seed that the hackfest design was built from.

Basically, the #1 goal was to have the website avoid the "herding
cats" problem we see so often on the list when trying to organize
events any time there's not a clear answer for when and where
something is happening (or there is, but people forget/change
details/whatever).

After that, the membership roster, RSS support, etc. were designed to
help establish a bit more of a sense of community, and to provide some
way to say, "yes, I am a participating member in PDX.rb" more
concretely than just subscribing to the mailing list.
