I suppose this is a better subject for an apache mailing list, but can
you post a sample snippet from an apache config that proxies properly?
 I'd really like to do tthis with some apps I am using.

Preston, I'd definitely recommend using lighttpd with rails.  I've
been using apache for a while (just not with proxying) and am
definitely a convert to lighttpd.
