Gah! I thought of that while writing my message and intended to mention
it. See!? I've already got bugs in just the *idea* of an autosensing
editor! If one ever got it to the point of running code, it would be
blowing up all over the place :-)

So malloc calls a timeout and starts rummaging around the free chain,
sorting things out, and merging adjacent small free blocks into larger
blocks. This takes 3 1/2 days.
