I'm going to also recommend VPS hosting.  Trying to configure and
deploy in a shared environment can be really rough.  I use spry.com,
but really anywhere is fine as long as they're good.  Going in with a
friend who also wants VPS hosting can be a nice way to cut the cost in
half, too.  Ben Matasar and I split a host this way and, man, having
root makes life so much less stressful.

I run a small xen-based VPS service, hosted at the Pittock Building in
downtown, called gridcolo.com. Having root is a nice way to go if you
want to be able to install the web server, database, etc. of your
choice. Server setup is 100% automated via the website, which is
written in ruby on rails.
