In contrast, "dreamhost rocks" yields well over 600k hits.

Remember that people who complain are often the vocal minority. I'm not
saying DH is fantastic, I have very little experience with them. I'm
just saying don't discount them just because other people dislike them.

Though I haven't run the numbers, it seems that Site5, my current
host, has similar lovers and haters. After working with Textdrive (I
almost third'd the previous comments about them, but figured that
would get out of hand fast if people all weighd in on their textdrive
problems) and another hosting service that claimed to have Rails
support but couldn't get FastCGI to work on their servers, I'd have to
say I've been happy with Site5, but I know they're not perfect. They
are cheap, though, and you get what you pay for.

I think it largely depends on what you're looking for. If you have a
basic site, maybe a blog or a low traffic app that can deal with bits
of downtime, I'm sure DH or Site5 would be more than addequate. You
can always get something up cheaply and quickly and find out whether
you like it. If you want to assure pretty good uptime and throughput,
you'd be much better off with a VPS or dedicated server through a
reputable provider (a few have already been mentioned, so I won't echo
them here).
