Was this using a C module or Ruby DL?

In general, I've found Ruby DL to be almost painless. RubyInline::C
was not bad either.  Obviously never tried using them on this
particular problem, though.

Trust me, unless you want to severely limit your platforms or like
nauseating, flashback-generating pain, I highly suggest not going the
C route.
