Ah, okay. I tackled this problem under Linux once from C (no Ruby
involved at all).  I ended up using some non-posix call, but it wasn't
too bad.  I guess I just assumed other OS's wouldn't be too painful
either. =\

Linking to ruby is not the problem.

Navigating the kernel structures is the problem (notably on BSD).
