Hello All,

I, too, have been lurking on this list for the past month or so to get a feel for the Portland Ruby Community. But seeing two Californians with post with intent to move up to Oregon this year prodded me out of my lurkerhood. I am also relocating up to Portland this June from San Francisco. My parents live in Portland and we are ready to escape the Bay Area rat race. The only difference is that I will be moving my company (it's actually a company my wife and I have together) up to Portland and we are looking for initially one, but eventually two RoR developers to continue the development of our Revelation customer experience research web application (check out www.revelationglobal.com). I would be interested to hear from folks who are interested in the position described below - especially from those in the Sacramento and Bay Area who are considering a move to Portland along the same time frame. The position is contract to hire with the timeline being contract starting around March 1 and hire in June when we get to Portland. If interested, please reply to me off list with a cover letter and a resume (no phone calls please).

Thanks!

Steve

Web Application Developer/Product Practice Lead

Web application developer needed for care, feeding and support of a new B2B Ruby on Rails application called Revelation. Revelation is a web application for contextual customer experience research. It enables researchers to capture and analyze human experiences as they unfold. The first release of the application is in beta and is hitting the market, and we are looking for a developer to not only lead ongoing support and improvements on the system, but also help create internal development systems and agile practices.

Candidates need to come to the table with the following:

- ideally 3-5 years of experience building database driven web applications
- Strong skills with XML, HTML and JavaScript
- Proficiency with SQL and database design
- Strong experience with Apache and Linux

In an ideal world, candidates would have:

- Ability to hit the ground running with Ruby (on Rails) application maintenance
- Experience with Postgres SQL
- Ability to edit shell scripts in various languages (sh, ruby, perl, php)
- Ability to compile and install Unix software
- Agile development experience

But, most importantly, we are looking for someone who:

- Speaks human and computer equally well

- Is insatiably curious about new technology – and is adept at applying it

- Can adapt and learn quickly

- Is entrepreneurial in spirit

- “Gets it” when it comes to being customer centric

- Wants to be involved with creating something that serves as the core of amazing customer experience

Compensation depends on experience and, well, if we like you. If interested, please forward resume to Steve August at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please no phone calls.

I'm another Sacramento Ruby programmer who has been considering making the move to PDX. I've been lurking on this list for a month or two. Partially to check for work, but also to see how active the Ruby community is in PDX.

From what I can tell, PDX seems to be much be better organized than Sacramento.

I might put some work into building a local Ruby group down here. I'm planning on moving to PDX soon, but I have a few months left before I graduate and I want to start pushing content now.

So far, I've put together some basic info on this Google Groups page: http://groups.google.com/group/sacrub

If you know anyone in Sacramento that might be interested in joining, please spread the word. Hopefully I'll be able to post some success stories soon.

P.S. Sam, you might want to try posting to LUGoD.org's job list as well. Davis seems to have the most active Linux User Group in the area. I'll probably be posting there soon to see if any of them know any Sacramento Ruby people.

Sam, just chiming in as a Sacramento Rubyist. Technically I live in Rocklin :) I subscribe to this list because I will be moving to Eugene, OR in the spring (originally planned to move to PDX, but now we're going to Eugene; don't know if Eugene has a Ruby brigade).

There are a few of us further east at least, as a couple co-workers of mine (I work for Adobe) also use Ruby. But, none of us are looking for another gig. A potential source is to touch base with the Engine Yard/Human Intelligence guys, as they're in Sac and are friendly and easy to contact. Good luck.

There doesn't seem to be much of an organized Ruby presence in
Sacramento (all I could find was 4 people on meetup), but perhaps one
of you fine folks knows a good Rails developer -- or even someone
who'd be able to learn Rails quickly -- looking for a contract gig?

I've been working part-time on a Rails app while in school. However,
I'll be graduating this summer, I'm tired of working alone, and I'm
none too keen on living in Sacramento ever again. All of which means
I'll need to hand off support and maintenance (S&M?) for this app so I
can re-enter the job market unencumbered.

Forwardees:
The app is a timecard entry system for our tutors, with some billing
features and map integration planned. VB/VBA and MS Access experience
are also quite helpful, as the existing reports are in Access and the
maps will likely come from MapPoint. Contact me at this address or
< [EMAIL PROTECTED]> for further info. [Please don't get clever with
'whois' and call my boss; he'll just refer you to me anyway. (= ]

Thanks,
-Sam
