Greetings folks,

One of our guys is having some problems with updating a PCB when changing around designators and subparts inside of schematic, then trying to carry changes forward to the PCB with a re-import. We have a schematic with a few dozen quad op-amps on it, and the annotations have been auto-assigned, so say U10, U11, U12, etc. Each one of these has four sub-parts, so we have U10a thru U10d on the schematic, etc. The PCB editor imported just fine with the default arrangement on the schematic, but now whilst working on optimizing the layout, we are gate-swapping on the schematic and changing the designators by hand to assign a better arrangement usage of the op-amp parts. Very often this will involve changing things like U10a to U12b, or similar, between different physical op-amps.

What we've been doing thus far is to pick a logical op-amp set in the schematic and temporarily change its designators to something large and clearly unused (U1000, for instance) and then name the subparts U1000a thru U1000d. The problem is that DXP is being VERY finicky about not properly importing the new U1000 part into the PCB layout and properly updating the airwires netlist. I've not had this update-import problem in 99SE, and I've generally not had it in DXP when using NON-subpart components. I have a feeling there is some sort of a trick that I'm missing, perhaps having to reset the Unique Identifiers for the changed parts, but I could really use some guidance here from someone who has done this under DXP... We keep hitting a dead-end.

My question would be simply: What is the recommended procedure for updating the PCB's components and netlist when gate-swapping between parts in the schematics set under DXP? Are there any hints or gotcha's to watch out for?

By the by, DXP2004 has been touting pin and gate-swapping as part of the new package. Has anyone used it yet who can comment on it being a useful (and working) feature?

Regards,
-- M
