We recently had the exact same problem with a Brother MFC-6800.
We had to go to Brother and down load a new driver to fix the problem.
The printer is a new one and stopped working for some reason. When it was back on line those symptoms appeared. The new driver fixed it.
I am using the latest driver for this printer V1.42 :(

DOH, low and behold, there is a fault in the driver that causes this:
from brother site:
" If you have a Brother printer machine and when fonts and images from certain PDF and / or Photoshop 4.0 files are not printed correctly or print out is mirrored, try putting the printer driver back into it's default settings by clicking the "Default" button within the printer driver.
If the problem persists, please download and run the following file."
Here is the page with the file on it:
http://solutions.brother.com/Library/faq/printer/prfaq0646/prfaq0646.html
This has now fixed the problem.
Ian can you post me the link to your bug site and I will write it up so others will be saved a fair few sheets of paper / toner / hair etc ;)
Thanks all for help
Regards,
Kat.
