I think this is the very straighforward side effect of butting traces 
perfectly.  The method would use a default 8mil grid to paint 8mil track sizes 
for example.

If you have been accustomed (as I have) to using say 6 or 7mil grid spacing for 
an 8mil trace size then inevitably there will be more traces in a largish fill 
area.
