Steve, Can you open the files with an ASCII editor and tell us what you see there? If it's an Adobe file, I wouldn't recommend you to look for getting gerbers from there. It wouldn't be scale 1:1. It might be a PCAD PDIF (database) file, which has PDF extension. In this case I may eventually help but it will depend if there is enough information which layers were used and if the padstacks are attached.
