We have had the experience that the large file size of the DDB is due to 99Se saving everything it creates. What it does is to create a database which as others have said is a monolithic file that does not allow simple error recovery.
As for source control systems, many of these are built for programs and replace the old version with the new one. The differences between the old and new versions are also saved so the older one may be recovered. The net effect is that when you check in a 20-40MB 'file' the SCS can take a very long time to determine the differences. So make one tiny change and you are looking at a time-wasting process to check it back in. We use Visual Source Safe and it also has it's own issues. Bottom line is the risk of loss goes up and the time is increased by using a single DDB. I have also had engineers keep a template and library directory in the project. Bad idea since this makes the DDB larger and you then have many different libraries floating around.
