i don't know about porting backward but i can assure you that from where 
i sit going forward has been *far* from effortless

granted, part of this effort has been perhaps been because of the way 
things were done (or not done) in 99SE
but i have spent HOURS getting a working 99SE board happy in AD6x after 
opening in AD6
generally getting the unique IDs assigned and other issues took most of 
the time

i will say that after spending the time that all projects going forward 
were successful but for me at least it was much more than opening and 
hitting save as latest version
