Hmmm,
Shame that Altium can't offer a leasing deal. I have been looking at Tsien's
Boardmaker again. I used their layout software many years ago (under DOS!)
and it was very, very good. Since then they have added schematic capture and
XSPICE sim. Moreover it was always very fast and very, very stable. None of
the contorted Orcad type manipulations, weird caching and "hidden" options
either.
The outright list price is something like £3000 + annual support but a
commercial lease with full support is £350/year.... less than the light
bill.
However, it is not Protel/DXP, it doesn't have the silky graphics or the
range of import/export options and over the years, despite the cursing, I
have grown to love Protel.
I would happily pay a reasonable annual lease for DXP if the support was
good and they fixed the bugs before changing versions. It would make it
much easier to up version and would avoid much of this messing around.
Wonder what they would charge?

Rob

That information will doubtless be of value to everyone who was not
previously aware of it - but it still doesn't change the fact that nobody
should have to "tweak" any files after they are opened using a more recent
version of AD (than the version which had been used at the time that those
files had previously been saved).

It should be clear to everyone that I fully agree with what Jeff Condit said
in an earlier message:

Regrettably though, accomplishing such an outcome would call for a far
higher level of quality control than what Altium has managed to display to
date (or at least up until the time that AD6 was released, though reading
the release notes provided for its service packs suggests that it is still
"business as usual" in that regard).

I could say more, but what's the point? Until substantially more users start
complaining much more vigorously about the level of defects within AD,
Altium are just going to continue delivering more and more and more and more
and more of the same...

Regards,
Geoff Harland.
