List, It's now been about two months since I introduced the two post rule as an experiment to see if it might help improve forum communication. I've received on and off List comments saying that it has, indeed, proved helpful in ways, for example, giving the original poster time to further reflect on responses they've received before posting replies to those responses.
But, of course, I've also received comments suggesting that the two post rule creates difficulties, especially when a post receives a response (or several responses) on the day in which it is posted. As it stands, the original poster has to wait a day to respond, and even then may have to decide whether to create a long post, if there is more than one responder and post it the next day or, alternatively, to reply to each responder on subsequent days. In this regard I especially appreciate the off List suggestions by Edwina, Jeff, and Jon and, of course, I've discussed this with Ben just today. So, I'd like to try modifying the current posting rule: I'm proposing that from 8/22 on that the original poster can feel free to reply to a response on the same day as they post. This can be a response to one person, or a combined response to more than one if the original poster would prefer to do that than waiting a day to respond to another (or others, as the case may be). I believe that it's good discussion practice not to make posts too long, but I leave that entirely up to the discretion of each member of the forum. Let's see if the change I'm instituting helps. If it appears that it does, I'll keep it in place; if not, I'll be open to suggestions as to other alternatives. Please refrain from sending your suggestions until at least a month into the revised posting rule, and please send them off List addressed to me and Ben with whom I'll review them. Best, Gary Richmond (writing as moderator of Peirce-L and co-manager of it and Arisbe with Ben Udell)
