Gary, List:
I, too, found this in my spam folder, so to better teach the algorithm to
stop doing that, I flagged it as not spam *and* I'm writing this response.
My focus is on the final observation of Gary's essay, describing a path to
a particular nondual awareness. There are many nondualities. In my view,
Gary describes the particular nondual awareness that the Mahamudra
tradition calls Primordial Mind. There is indeed a way to get there through
increasingly fine-grained prescinding, dropping every cognitive add-on you
supply on top of the field of open awareness, which has the (surprising)
effect of dissolving the distinction between, as Gary elegantly puts it,
*feeling* and *what happens*.
It is difficult to write about this; even my last sentence needed a
dualistic "you" ("you supply...") in order to functionally point at the all
the generative work being done to construct the model we each live in, a
model built and run by the primordial mind I am describing getting in touch
with. This is why the major nondual traditions (of this kind of nonduality:
Mahamudra, Dzogchen, nondual Shaivism) all emphasize you have to *do* this,
you have to literally *experience* primordial mind, not simply "understand"
it conceptually. You could say that this primordial mind is ontologically
prior to conceptual understanding.
I discovered Peirce years before I discovered nondual open awareness. In my
experience, Peirce's phenoscopy is significantly easier to understand and
reason about after developing some facility with nondual vipashyana or
shinay meditation.
