Frederik Stjernfelt's new book Natural Propositions is now available, at
least in the U.S., for a very reasonable price, and I think it's a must-read
for both Peirceans and biosemioticians. Those involved in the empirical
sciences of biology and psychology often take for granted things that
logicians and linguists overlook, and vice versa, resulting in
misunderstandings on both sides. Stjernfelt's explanation of "the actuality
of Peirce's doctrine of Dicisigns" makes it clear that Peircean semiotics is
NOT only about language or about human thought processes, and that
proto-propositions are involved in the cognitive processes of even the
simplest organisms. And this of course gives us a new perspective on the
relations among language, logic and life. I recommend it most highly!
