Jerry,
One of the "Doors I Came In" (DICI) when I first bumped into Peirce was a very
strong interest in visual presentations of logic, mathematics, and scientific
subjects in general. So I dug and delighted in the diagrammatic, graphical,
and picturesque systems of Dodgson, Euler, Frege, Leibniz, Peirce, Venn, and
every other system I found that was remotely iconic-o-graphic in character.
One of the first things I tried to do with the chemistry and computing courses
that I took as a freshman in college was to write a Fortran program that would
print out the valence diagrams of chemical compounds with all the dots and all
the symbols in all the right places, given just the names of the reactants that
went into the soup. Well, you know that was like beating a dead hobby horse,
which I learned the next term when we got a bit of molecular orbital theory.
But it was good exercise all the same.
Lunch!
Jon
