Fortran in those days was totally stone knives and bear skins when it came to
graphical or even symbol string (they called it "hollerith") processing. That
plus trying to get a monolithic mainframe to least squares fit straight lines to
my lab data when the computer lab was 2 miles away and the snow was blowing and
the "turnaround time" was 12 hours on the best of days ... that all conspired to
burn out my interest in computational approaches to anything for 5 or 6 years.
It was about 1972 when John Eulenberg came in from Stanford to upstart and
direct the Artificial Language Lab at Michigan State. He gave a course on
mathematical linguistics that used Wall for its main text, supplemented by
Charles Morris and Spencer Brown and a whole smorgasbord of wilder reading.
Plus we now had list and string processing languages like Lisp and Snobol.
