Auke, List: I agree that "all planetary orbits are elliptical" is a Rule, and after contemplating it for a while, I think that this is indeed an inductive (rather than abductive) conclusion. Kepler's initial abduction was that the orbit of ONE planet (Mars) is elliptical, which he subsequently generalized to ALL planets. The two arguments thus look something like this.
*Abduction* Result (surprising fact): Mars exhibits such-and-such deviations from a circular orbit. Rule (circumstances of occurrence): Anything that has an elliptical orbit exhibits such-and-such deviations from a circular orbit . Case (hypothesis/conjecture): Therefore (plausibly), Mars has an elliptical orbit. *Induction* Result: Mars has an elliptical orbit. Case: Mars is a planet. Rule: Therefore (probably), all planets have elliptical orbits.
