But Peirce was working on spectra in
chemistry and astronomy long before Einstein published his 1905 paper that
introduced the hypothesis of discrete photons.  Since Peirce did not have
acccess to a research library in his later years, he probably never read
that paper.  But it's likely that he may have heard or read some brief
summaries about Einstein's famous 1905 papers on relativity and quantized
light.
