Perhaps Peirce would have appreciated the irony that the AI and connectionist insights into man-machine interaction he inspired are creating robotic "intelligent slaves:" far more capable than the sharecroppers and wage-slaves he detested. Would he have been pleased that the near universal higher education which made the voice-activated iPhone and mobile EKG and mobile heart pumps that enable each of us to seek "philosopher-king" status were enabled by the self-educated pragmatist Abraham Lincoln [through the Morrill Land Grant Act or 1862, creating state universities and supporting public education].
