On another list we've discussed this some. Cockburn
says its 1993 footage, but someone pointed out that
one of the sports jerseys in the clip shows the name
of an athelete from '97 and '98.
I only saw the clip once, and so didn't have the
chance to analyze it. Was it Nablus? I understood it
was a refugee camp in southern Lebanon. Regardless,
it's the same clip being show over and over again, no?
It was obviously staged, no matter where it was, given
the people standing around watching. Who staged it,
and for what reason, is another matter entirely. And
is CNN balancing that clip with clips of Arafat and
other Arab leaders denouncing the attack? I'm not in a
position to watch much CNN so I don't know-- but in
the one clip I saw of Arafat, he seemed genuinely
horrified.
BTW, I was in Nablus in 1990, during the tail end of
the first intifada. I was given a tour of the
horrendously under-supplied City Hospital, along with
a group of religious leaders-- a rabbi, and several
priests, Catholic and orthodox. As we were walking
down a hallway, a woman patient called for us. We went
in the room and she explained that she had been near a
demonstration that was tear-gassed, resulting in the
spontanious abortion of her fetus. She then pulled a
box out with the fetus in it, and asked that the
priests pray over it. This event, I'm certain, was not
staged.
