this is used for secure *file* deletion in many sensitive applications,
and the US Govt requires so many passes to meet a specification (for
non-mil work). up until Nov 2007 this was even accepted by the dept of
defense, but that second link above now says NSA requires complete
degaussing or destruction of disk. i would guess that s because disks
are so cheap now, rather than a weakness in the wiping mechanism.
