Like I just said, it makes sense as part of a strategy to peel of respectable Republicans and leave the loons outside gnashing their teeth - reinventing the Dems as a party of those within one standard deviation of the mean. The "left" of the Dems, who are about 1.5 SDs off center, will continue to vote Dem out of habit and naivete.
